Formidable vs Typeform: Which Form Builder Is Right for Your Business?

Typeform changed what people expect from an online form. Its conversational design, smooth one-question-at-a-time experience and polished builder became the standard against which everything else is measured.
Formidable starts from the same bar and adds a second job: making sure every response becomes a real contact in your CRM the moment it lands, not a row in a spreadsheet you export later. The form and the contact base are the same system, and a submission can route the person straight into a pipeline without a single integration to configure.
This comparison looks at both tools honestly, dimension by dimension, so you can pick the one that fits the work you actually need to do. If you want to see how Formidable compares to Typeform, Jotform, Google Forms, HubSpot and Pipedrive in one table, that broader comparison is here.

Where Typeform leads
Typeform's strengths are genuine and worth naming clearly.
The one-question-at-a-time respondent experience Typeform built still sets the visual standard for forms: smooth transitions, keyboard navigation, a clean progress bar and a look that feels designed rather than default. Its Logic Jump builder presents branching as a visual flow diagram that most teams find faster to map for complex surveys than a rule-based editor. The template library is extensive and well-crafted. Native video embed questions let you put a short video inside a question before collecting a response. The integration catalog is broad, and the connection to HubSpot is tight. For teams where the form is a brand touchpoint and the respondent experience is the single most important criterion, Typeform is the right call.
Building with Formidable
Formidable's builder gives you a drag-and-drop canvas with a question palette on the left and a settings panel on the right. Adding a question is one click from the palette; reordering is drag-and-drop; field settings open in the right panel without leaving the canvas. The toolbar across the top puts Logic, Preview, Share and Publish one click away at any point.
Thirty question types cover every scenario a professional or small-business form needs: short text, long text, email, phone, website, number, single choice, checkboxes, dropdown, yes/no, picture choice, linear scale, rating, opinion scale, Net Promoter Score, multiple-choice grid, checkbox grid, date, file upload and more.

Templates: five starting points
When you create a new form, Formidable offers five templates to choose from: Start blank, Lead Capture, Feedback / NPS, Event Registration and Quiz. Each prefills a realistic set of questions for that use case, which you then edit, extend or trim. For a first form, a template cuts setup time from minutes to seconds.

Two modes: Focus and Classic
The preview panel has a toggle: Focus (one question at a time, keyboard-navigable, with a progress bar) and Classic (all questions on one page, a traditional form layout). Both modes use the same questions and the same logic rules. You pick the one that fits the context: a lead capture or qualification form typically works well in Focus mode; an event registration where the respondent wants to scan the full form before starting works better in Classic mode.
The preview also switches between Desktop and Mobile so you can check the rendering before publishing.

Welcome screens, ending screens and presentation settings
The Presentation and screens step in the setup wizard lets you control the full respondent journey beyond the questions themselves. You can add a welcome screen to set context, configure one or more ending screens with a custom title and thank-you message, set a redirect URL for after submission, and toggle the progress bar and question numbers on or off. Button labels (Next, Back, Submit) are also editable here.

Conditional logic and quiz scoring
The Logic panel opens from the toolbar inside the builder. Rules follow a WHEN/THEN structure: pick a question, choose a condition (contains, equals, is empty, and more), group conditions with AND or OR, and set an action (show or hide a specific question). Multiple rules can be stacked, and each rule can hold multiple conditions and multiple actions.
A quiz scoring engine assigns point values to choice questions and calculates a total score on submit. This is useful for lead qualification forms, skill assessments, product-fit quizzes and diagnostics that need a numeric output rather than a simple branch.

The decisive difference: responses become real contacts
This is where Formidable and Typeform take different paths.
With Typeform, a response lands in Typeform's response table. Getting it into a CRM means setting up an integration: a Zapier zap, a native HubSpot connector or a similar bridge you configure, test and maintain. If the integration breaks or lags, responses accumulate without reaching your contacts.
With Formidable, the response is a contact in the same platform. The field mapping step lets you match each form question to a contact property: First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone, Company or any custom field you have defined. When someone submits, Formidable either finds the person in your contact base by email and updates their record, or creates a new contact with the mapped values already filled in.

No export, no import, no column matching. The contact is there the moment the form is submitted.
Contact matching, tags and pipeline routing
The Submission rules step sets the CRM behavior for every response. You choose how to match an existing contact (by email), what to do when a match is found (update the contact or leave the existing record unchanged), which tags to apply automatically, and where to add the contact: a contact list or the first column of a Kanban board.
When a form points at a Kanban board, that column's automations fire for every new response. A lead who fills in your contact form can arrive in your pipeline, tagged and in the right stage, before you have even opened the notification email.

Personalized prefilled links: Formidable's most useful hidden feature
When you click Review and publish, the second step is "Send to contacts." You search your contact base and select individuals, lists, CSV imports, tags or contacts sourced from a previous web form, then send them the form link directly from Formidable.
The link each contact receives is personalized: their existing name and email are already filled in when they open the form. They only complete the fields they do not already have. And because the link is tied to their contact record before they even open the form, the response is matched to the right contact automatically, even if the email field is left blank.
This is not something Typeform can do without building a custom integration and managing URL parameter logic externally. In Formidable it is two clicks from the publish screen.

Sharing: link, embed, QR code and prefilled URL builder
The Share panel gives you a public link to copy and share, an embed code for a full-page iframe, and a QR code for print materials, slide decks or physical locations. A prefilled link builder lets you add key-value parameters to pre-populate any field via URL, useful for campaign tracking or multi-step flows where some data is already known from the source.

After completion and webhooks
After a submission Formidable shows a custom confirmation message, optionally displays a "submit another response" link or redirects the respondent to a URL you choose. For back-end integrations, two options live under Notifications and Webhooks: an email notification to the form owner on each new response, and a webhook that posts the full response payload to any endpoint you control. Webhooks are queued and retried on failure, so no response is silently dropped.

Multilingual forms
The Translations panel opens from the toolbar in the builder. You enter a language code and fill in translations for each question label, ending screen copy and button text (Next, Back, Submit). The form detects the respondent's browser language and serves the correct version. For teams that operate across markets, one form definition can support multiple audiences without duplicating the form.

Access control: close date and response limits
The Access and limits step lets you set a close date after which the form stops accepting new responses, cap the total number of responses, restrict the form to one response per respondent and allow respondents to edit their answer after submitting. These controls matter for event registrations with a seat cap, time-bound surveys and research projects where you need a defined sample size.

Analytics: from first view to completed submission
The Submissions view has three tabs. Responses shows the full table of individual answers, searchable, filterable and exportable to CSV. Summary gives aggregate counts per question. Analytics shows the conversion funnel: total views, starts, completions, completion rate and average completion time, plus a per-question drop-off count so you can see exactly where respondents leave the form.
That funnel is the practical tool for improving a form over time: if most respondents abandon at question four, the question is too long, too sensitive or in the wrong place.

Every response lives on the contact record
The top-level Submissions view lists every response across all your forms, each tied to the matched or created contact. Open any contact's card in Trevally and there is a Forms and submissions tab showing every form that person has completed, with their answers inline. The form data is not in a separate tool you have to cross-reference: it is part of the same contact history as their emails, notes, tasks and pipeline activity.

When Typeform is the right choice
Choose Typeform when:
- The form is a brand experience and visual polish is the top priority above everything else.
- Your CRM is already running in HubSpot or another platform with a strong native Typeform integration.
- You need video-in-question capability.
- Your team prefers mapping complex branching visually as a Logic Jump flow diagram.
- You are working at a company that has a dedicated CRM team managing integrations.
When Formidable is the right choice
Choose Formidable when:
- You want form responses to become managed contacts without an integration to build or maintain.
- You need responses to enter a pipeline or contact list automatically on submit.
- You want to send personalized, prefilled forms directly to existing contacts.
- You need multilingual forms, access controls or quiz scoring without extra subscriptions.
- You are building from scratch and want forms, contacts, pipeline and tasks in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Is Formidable free? Formidable is included in Trevally, which is free to start. You get the full form builder, contact matching, pipeline routing, analytics and sharing without a separate subscription.
Does Formidable have a conversational one-question-at-a-time mode like Typeform? Yes. Formidable's Focus mode presents one question at a time with keyboard navigation and a progress bar. You can switch any form between Focus and Classic mode in the Presentation settings.
Can Formidable do conditional logic like Typeform's Logic Jump? Yes. Formidable's Logic panel lets you build AND/OR rules that show or hide specific questions based on any previous answer. It is a rule-based editor rather than a visual flow diagram, which some teams find more precise and others find less intuitive than Typeform's approach.
What happens if someone who already exists in my contacts submits a form? Formidable matches the submission to the existing contact by email. You choose whether it updates the contact's fields with the new answers or leaves the existing record unchanged. Either way, the submission is linked to their contact card.
Can I connect Formidable to external tools? Yes. The webhook option posts the full response payload to any endpoint, which connects to Zapier, Make or a custom back-end. Email notifications to the form owner are also sent on every new submission.
How does Formidable compare to other form builders beyond Typeform? The full comparison covers Typeform, Jotform, Google Forms, HubSpot Forms and Pipedrive Web Forms in a single table.
A note on this comparison
This is Trevally's blog, so it naturally highlights where Formidable fits best. Typeform is a capable, well-regarded product and the details here are kept qualitative on purpose: features and plans change, so check Typeform's own site for current specifics before making a decision. The goal of this article is to give an honest picture of the tradeoff, not to declare a single winner for every use case.
